Description

A photograph of the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, football team of 1891. This was the second football team at Springfield College started by Amos Alonzo Stagg, the "grand old man of football". The original team was known as "Stagg's Eleven" and the "Stubby Christians." The team played the first indoor football game against Yale at Madison Square Garden in 1890. Shown are, first row, left to right is: Walter O. Black left end,(Class of 1892; James Naismith center, (Class of 1891); William H.Davis, left half back, (Class of 1892); and Thomas P.Bond, substitute, (Class of 1893). Second Row: J.W. McCartney, substitute; Max J. Exner, substitute, (Class of 1892); Amos A.Stagg, right half back, (Class of 1891); Albert E. Webb, left guard, (Class of 1894); and Harvey L. Smith, quarterback, (Class of 1893). Third Row: Frank Mahan, right tackle, (Class of 1893); Raymond .P. Kaighn, substitute, (Class of 1893); Edwin .P. Ruggles, left tackle, (Class of 1895); Byron Van Leuvan, right end, (Class of 1892); Frank N. Seerley, full back, (Class of 1890); and Thomas D. Patton, right guard, (Class of 1892).
