George Edward Day was born September 21, 1864, in Dana, Massachusetts, a town that no longer exists due to the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir.

Day had a childhood he describes as similar to most children. He attended high school for a short time before he became a dry-goods salesman. After approximately eight years in this profession, a call to Christian service and advice of friends led him into YMCA work. He attended the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, beginning in the fall of 1891.

After graduating from the secretarial class in 1893, Day served as Assistant State Secretary for YMCAs in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He then spent the next 22 years in service to small community YMCAs in the area. While serving as General Secretary for the YMCA in Somerville, MA, he attended Harvard University for one year.

In 1917, Day moved to Camp Greene, Charlotte, NC, where he aided the YMCA's effort to help soldiers develop healthy habits and clean, virtuous living, while both at the camps and when they were deployed to Europe.

Day died at the age of 55 after two years of service due to overwork and complications from acute nephritis. He was a frequent contributor to newspapers and periodicals and wrote a novel and several poems.
